EFM - Inadequate transport links hit St Andrews at weekend
18, 02 26 13:54
The East Fife Mail today reported how failed traffic-lights on main road into St Andrews underline inadequacy of existing transport infrastructure.
The failed lights at the BT Openreach works on the A91 caused tailbacks each way, at their peak delaying vehicles for 40 minutes almost as far as Balgove and the Fast & Fresh snack bar. St Andrews is a popular destination for day-trippers at weekends, most of whom arrive by car and the great majority of those use the A91, the second-busiest Fife Council road. Because St Andrews is only accessible by road, the A91 assumes an even greater importance, especially as it also carries most of the buses in and out of St Andrews, including those calling at Leuchars Railway Station.
Transport Scotland's effectively dismissing those concerns in favour of tweaking the bus service to the station is ignoring the fact that most of the 7 million annual visitors to St Andrews are not even taking the train to Leuchars, nor are they travelling by bus but are instead choosing to drive the whole way.
